interlibrary loan

Medaille College Library participates in local, state, regional and national resource sharing programs to obtain materials for its users. The resource sharing service is known as interlibrary loan or ILL. Interlibrary loan is a library-to-library transaction; therefore all requests must be channeled through our library.
Eligibility:
Interlibrary loan services are available to current Medaille faculty, staff, and students.
Submitting requests:
Interlibrary loan forms are available online, through the EBSCO and Worldcat databases.
Interlibrary Loan FAQs:
- Books and copies of periodical articles not owned by Medaille College Library may be obtained from other institutions.
- There is usually no charge for this service. If a lending library charges to lend us an item we will notify you before we process the request.
- Please plan ahead and allow at least 1 week for processing of any interlibrary loan request.
Interlibrary Loan tips:
- Include all bibliographic information in your request.
- Request renewals at least 3 days before the due date.
- Return interlibrary loan materials to the Circulation Desk.
Loan Periods:
The loan period for borrowed materials varies and is determined by the lending library. Due dates are clearly marked on each borrowed item. Generally, libraries offer a three week loan period, with one renewal possible. Renewals MUST be requested before the due date of the current loan. Renewals are not automatically granted by the lending library.
In order to maintain good resource sharing relationships with other institutions, due dates must be honored.
Notification:
Borrowers are notified via e-mail when material is received. Interlibrary loan materials may be picked up at the Circulation Desk. If interlibrary loan items are not picked up within one week, the item will be discarded or returned. If an article request is received electronically, we will e-mail the article to you.
Basic Policies:
- Items owned by Medaille College Library in any format may not be borrowed from another library, except under special circumstances, for example if the item is lost or missing.
- Borrowed materials must be returned by the due date indicated. Late returns of library materials endanger our resource sharing relationship with other libraries.
- Consistently returning interlibrary loan materials late will result in the blocking of future interlibrary loan requests.
- All users are subject to fines and replacement costs for lost or damaged interlibrary loan materials.
- Undergraduate students are limited to 5 interlibrary loan requests in the system at a time.
- Copyright restrictions limit interlibrary loan requests to 5 articles, per journal, per year, from journal issues published within the last five years.
